BERNDNAUT SMILDE

The twilight of my youth gave birth to the wonders of the disposable camera - armed with my Kodak and an an innate ambition to explore, I would document the clouds. I found them perpetually fascinating. They were like ever changing pieces of art, and to watch them from and dissipate to re form into completely contrasting entities was mesmerizing.

Berndnaut Smilde, a Dutch Artist, in his latest exhibition, has scientifically installed real nimbus clouds in various empty spaces in Amsterdam. Through careful regulation of humidity and temperature, Smilde utilizes spray from a fog machine to generate a cloud. This apparition only lasts for a brief moment, however due to the abstraction which takes place, it is still one of the most beautiful exhibitions I have had the pleasure of stumbling across.

Clouds encompass the cycle of creation and destruction, and perhaps this is why I will always be found looking up at the sky with a disposable camera in my hand (or in an abandoned church admiring the latest installation by Smilde).
